Shirley Mae (Hoppe) Morrison

SHIRLEY MAE MORRISON, a life-long resident of Alameda, passed away at her residence on Saturday, May 23, 2020, age 95. She was born at Mrs. Tenant’s Maternity Hospital in Alameda. She met her husband of 60 years, the late James E. Morrison Jr. at Washington Park. Loving mother and mother-in-law of Michael E. and the late Helen Morrison of Union City and Gregory Y. Morrison of Alameda. Devoted daughter of the late Frank and Blanche Hoppe of Alameda. Dear sister of Barbara Rossi of North Carolina, and the late Anne Wagner of Concord, Joyce Jelovich of Livermore, and Patricia Bulmer of Hayward. Beloved Grandmother to Peter Morrison (Maria) of Pleasant Hill, Adrienne De Ponte (Jason) of San Leandro, Christopher Morrison (Jennifer) of Discovery Bay and Jennifer Corey (Patrick) of Hayward. Dearest great-grandmother of seven. Shirley attended Alameda High School and raised two sons who both retired from long careers at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. She was active at St. Joseph’s school library. Shirley was a fierce protector of her family, who always came first. Her loving demeanor made everyone around her feel comfortable, even strangers. She often helped people through difficult times and always gave everything she could to charities. Shirley had a strong connection to nature, creating beautiful gardens with fences and gazebos that she personally designed. She had natural artistic ability making beautiful sketches and drawings. She was an amazing interior designer, creating her own paint colors and finding just the right piece to make a room look wonderful. Shirley loved traveling, especially to Hawaii, where her husband was stationed while he was in the Navy. Shirley possessed mechanical skills and she and her husband would restore cars together. The most important thing in Shirley’s life was her family, especially her two devoted sons who took care of her during her final years of her life. Her family will miss her dearly.
